Programme:
Beethoven’s “Ghost” trio acquired its name from his student, Carl Czerny, who thought the composer had lifted many of its themes from a discarded opera based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Whether this is true or not, the ghostly theme heard in the slow movement could well have been inspired by the meeting of the King with the witches on the heath.
Fauré: trio in D minor, Op.120 for violin, cello and piano
Shostakovitch: trio in E minor, Op.67
Beethoven: “Ghost” Trio Op.70 in D major
Performers: The Casella Trio are contributing to the Maldon Festival’s Young Musicians Concerts. One of their number Gabriel Francis-Dehqani is returning to play for the second year in a row, having delighted audiences in 2022 playing Barber’s much loved Adagio for strings. In 2022 he was the Essex Young Musician of the Year.
